Busy Street of Madurai  trolley sale of Jigarthanda

Jigarthanda is more than just a beverage for the people of Madurai; it's an experience. Many locals have a routine that includes the noises of a busy street, the sight of a vendor expertly combining the ingredients, and the first taste of that cool, creamy concoction. It's a must for tourists to sample Jigarthanda. The beverage embodies the essence of Madurai: a fusion of warmth, innovation, heritage, and refreshment.

It was discovered that this beverage essentially cooled the body and combated heat. As suggested by the name "Jigarthanda" literally translates to "heart cooler", which translates from Persian to mean "heart" (JIGAR) and "cool" (THANDA), the drink's cooling properties will reach the core of the user.

The Origins: A Story from the Mughal Era?

While some believe the drink has roots in the Mughal Empire, brought to South India by travelers and traders, others suggest it was a local innovation influenced by the Mughals' love for rich, cool drinks. The Mughals originated in the North, where there is a frigid climate. Extremely hot and humid regions could not withstand the heat during their tour to South India, and they had to go through a horrible phase to escape it. They regularly consume Faloods and prepare drinks with sharbat-made ice cream.

In 1977, Vendors attempted a variety of drinks to appease the Mughals and make up for falooda. The vendor P S Sheikh Meeran started combining different ingredients to make a delectably fulfilling delicacy. To quench the thirst and to beat the heat for Mughals, and so Jigarthanda was born, a drink that really did live up to its name, chilling the heart as much as the body. Sheikh began selling Jigarthanda on the streets in the early going by employing trolleys. Jigarthanda was the natives' beverage of choice. Offered at roadside stands and tiny stores in Madurai, it was a summertime favorite for people trying to stay cool. However, the reputation of this unusual beverage increased along with Madurai's growth as a cultural and tourism destination. Visitors to the city would gush about Jigarthanda, which led to its spread across Tamil Nadu and eventually to other parts of India.

What Makes Jigarthanda Unique?

At first glance, Jigarthanda might resemble other popular Indian drinks like falooda or badam milk. However, its uniqueness lies in its ingredients and preparation. Here’s a breakdown of its key components:

1. Nannari Syrup: Made from the roots of the sarsaparilla plant, this syrup is both aromatic and medicinal. It’s known to cool the body and aid digestion—perfect for those hot Madurai afternoons.

2. Milk: Thick, creamy, and boiled to the right consistency, milk forms the base of the drink. The richness of this ingredient is what gives Jigarthanda its velvety texture.

3. Ice Cream: Unlike regular scoops, the ice cream in Jigarthanda is special. Made from reduced milk, it has a distinct flavor and consistency, often homemade, which makes every sip indulgent.

4. Badam Pisin: A natural edible gum derived from almond trees, this ingredient gives Jigarthanda its jelly-like texture. It’s another secret to the drink’s cooling properties.

5. Sugar and Crushed Ice: To balance the flavors, sugar is added according to taste, and the final touch is a generous serving of crushed ice to keep the drink cool and refreshing.

Calories: Approximately 250 - 300 ml serving of Jigarthanda has 300 - 400 calories. It also contains a good amount of fat and proteins.

Does the drink serve any Health Benefits?

Of course, the drink's components can aid in digestion and strengthen the immune system. The specifically prepared nannari syrub has good medicinal potential, and Badam Pisin can help you maintain constant mental and physical coolness by acting as a natural coolant.
