Meaning of  women empowerment:

Empowerment means “giving power out”. Women empowerment refers to the effort to raise the status of women by promoting the sense of self-worth, determining their own choice and their rights to influence social changes and strengthen the economic status of an individual. Women empowerment is important for the social development of families, communities and countries.

What is women empowerment?

Women empowerment only came into existence in the 19th century. The United Nation termed the period from 1975 – 1985 the decade for women. First National women’s day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York City by the socialist party of America. In 1977, the United Nation General Assembly proclaimed March 8th as an official UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace. India adopted ‘International Women’s day” in 2001.

Women empowerment is a movement to strive to eliminate the social economic and political divide between men and women.

Motive to empower women:

There are 5 motives to empower women to increase the status of women.

  • self worth
  • Determine choices to opportunities
  • Rights to access and resource 
  • Power to control their own lives
  • Ability to influences the social changes
These are the motives to empower women to create just and equitable society for everyone.

 SOURCES OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT:

The development of society and welfare of women depend upon certain sources.

·        SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT :

Many women even today face injustice regarding health, family decision, childbirth and many other issues. Women also endure inequality with regard to land and property rights. By empowering the women, helps to build up the justices and equitable society for everyone. Social empowerment gives way for women to empower themselves by not restricting to a certain pattern of lifestyle.

·        EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT:

Most effective way to improve equal socio - economic status is through Education. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was launched to educate the women for their betterment in life. Statistics say that educated women spend 90% of their earnings to improve the status of families whereas men spend only 30 to 40% of their earnings. Educating women leads to increased economic growth. So, women should be given free and compulsory education to understand their rights and duties in society.

·        ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT:

Creating more employment opportunities for women can reduce poverty in the country. Improving the financial status of women can break down the barriers of inequality. A financially independent woman has the ability to manage risk and improves the way of handling the resources, assets, income and their strategic choices.

·        POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT:

Politics is the strongest and most effective way to bring vast differences in society. By giving the power and authority to women, gives immense impact in influencing the way the rest of the world views women’s strength. But recent day’s research says that in terms of political empowerment the number of female ministers declined from about 23% in 2019 to just 9% in 2021. The female work force participation rate also decreased from 24.8% to 22.3%.

·        PSYCHOLOGICAL EMPOWERMENT:

Gender discrimination, sexual abuse, harassment, education, child marriage, honor killing and many other issues are the challenges faced by the women till today. Psychology empowerment motivates the women to come out of the fear and boost her mental strength to fight all the barriers faced by her in the society and in the family. Helps her to be stronger and face the world with confidence.

GOVT SCHEMES TO EMPOWER THE WOMEN:

There are many schemes launched for the development of women. Few main schemes are

  1.  BALIKA SAMRIDDHI YOJANA: Promote education for women. Girls born after August 15th 1997 are underprivileged for funds for education.
  2.  MAHILA UDYAM NIDHI SCHEME: Small Industries Development of India (SIDBI) provides funds for women to start businesses of their own.
  3.  UDYOGINI SCHEME: Women between the age of 18 – 45, in the field of Agriculture, Retails and any other small business are eligible to apply for loans up to INR one lakh rupee.

ORGANIZATION FIGHTING FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT:

  •  SEWA – Self Employed Women’s Association.
  •  Snehalaya – “Home of love”.
  •  North East Network (NEN) – Women’s Right Association.
  •  Azad Foundation – Resource – poor women living in urban areas in India.
  •  MAKKAM (Mahila Kisan Adhikaar Manch) – Female farmer’s rights operated in 24 states in India.
  •  CREA – Understanding and advocating for their Human Rights.
  •  Vimochana – Offers assistance to the victims of domestic, violence, mental violence, dowry torture, sexual harassment.

Helpline Number for women in India:

  •  1090 – Women in need of help and assistance.
  •  181 – Victims of violence, abuse or harassment.
  •  112 – Any kind of emergency situation.
  •  100 – To report violence, abuse, harassment.

  •  1098 – National helpline for children in India.

 CONCLUSION:

Every woman should be empowered in true ways. By empowering women helps to make the society and world a better place to live. It is essential to recognize the achievement, who work towards a more equitable and just society for women.
